I agree. Also, he would have been less noticeable to people searching for him traveling on his own. Remember also that no one knew that Powell was the man responsible for the attack on Seward's house. The authorities at first believed it might have been John Surratt.

Agreed - Powell would more or less skedaddle by himself -- he would not want to be encumbered by anyone else. I don't think that was his way. He was a big boy - he could take care of himself.

Yes, Powell was pretty much unknown in DC - exactly what he wanted, especially also in lieu of the handwritten note on his Oath of Allegiance that he "remain North of Philadelphia for the Duration of the War....."
