They all first met Booth through John Surratt. (Probably that is ... which means I'm only saying it because others have said it ... Lewis Payne seems to be the least certain).

which (if true) leads to the question ... without John Surratt, would anything have happened to prevent the normal ending of the play at Ford's Theatre on April 14th 1865?

and also to the question ... am I correct with my answer to this trivia question?

If AussieMick is correct, Mary was born in May or June, Herold in June, and Atzerodt in June. The odd man out is Powell, who was born in April.

Correct! And to save anyone from having to find the dates, Mary Surratt was arrested on April 17, and her birthday was May (or June) something, 1823. Lewis Powell was arrested April 17 and his birthday was April 22, 1844. David Herold was arrested on April 26, and his birthday was June 16, 1842. George Atzerodt was arrested on April 20, and his birthday was June 12, 1835. They were executed on July 7, 1865.

Just a little aside regarding Mary Surratt's possible month of birth. At the Surratt House Museum, we have on display a tiny book of devotions that was supposedly with Mary during her incarceration. It is dedicated to the month of Mary, referring to a Catholic tradition of honoring the Blessed Virgin during the month of May. That leads us to speculate that May was also Mrs. Surratt's birth month.

James O. Hall was known for searching down minutiae, and he calculated her parents' wedding, date of their first born (son John Zaddoc Jenkins), and the possible biological time period of Mary's conception and gestation as the second child. He could not pinpoint the exact date, but the possibility placed her birth in the second half of May or first part of June. The book of devotions for "the Mary Month of May" seems to support that.

ok ... going to bed now (the Footy game having finished) ... clue is : the conflict on which that movie was based had several high placed people involved ... one of whom had a connection with the resulting crisis from The Trent incident.

Field Marshal Garnet Wolseley, who took over following the Battle of Rorke's Drift (depicted in the movie Zulu), during the American Civil War had been sent to Canada following the Trent incident. Wolseley took leave of his military duties the following year and went to Virginia to observe the war for himself and met with Generals Robert E. Lee and Longstreet. Following the war, he penned a defense of Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest's actions during the Ft. Pillow massacre.
