Brilliant, Laurie, that is correct. Hildesheim is about 20 miles from Hannover, so it was only Major Rathbone whom the rose bush witnessed. It grows against the eastern apse of the Cathedral (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) reaching a height of around 10 metres (33 ft).
   
While documentation verifies its age at approximately 700 years, according to legend, the wild dog rose (Rosa canina) dates back to the establishment of the diocese of Hildesheim, around 815. The Cathedral was destroyed by Allied bombers in 1945 during the Second World War, but the roots of the rose bush survived and it blossomed again among the ruins.

A lenghty poem about the rose, "called The Rose-Tree of Hildesheim", was published in 1896 by English scholar Jessie Weston.
