Thanks for all these brilliant guesses, Thomas, Laurie, and Roger - and Thomas' is indeed correct. Kudos! Speaking of correct, I probably will have to adjust the photo to make hint #1 a correct one:

Laurie, you may see better in the entirety:

I chuckled about it being a current picture with all the snow, Eva. Thomas, I am not even going to guess about your last comment. You really are ready for college if you are out semi-streaking in this mess.

I know I'm ready, I don't have enough credits to transfer just yet.

Julia Dent Grant. She wanted a gypsy outfit to go to a costumed event -- right down to adding a tambourine. Gen. Grant refused to go in costume, but he did give her that nickname.

Well done, Laurie - I should probably have waited longer as I read this on this most interesting site the link to which Laurie sent me last weekend:
http://www.firstladies.org/biographies/f...ography=19

"After his wife organized a Mardi Gras masquerade ball early in their marriage, Grant would only appear in his uniform while she invested an enormous amount of energy into her costume as a gypsy. Observing her enthusiasm, he was prompted to go out and purchase a tambourine to complete her outfit, and nicknamed her 'Tambourina' for a time."

Laurie, you win Julia Grant dancing Esmeralda's tambourine variation for you - here's how it should look like:

Thank you, Eva. I shall practice and be entertainment (comedy) at the conference.

Who was the first doctor to serve President and Mrs. Lincoln and their sons after their arrival in D.C. in 1861?

That's what I would have guessed also, but he did not take over until 1862 (according to my source) when the first doctor died.

BTW: Dr. Stone's specialty was eye disorders.
