Hugh Boyle, who is the speaker that they base this comment on, has been a longtime member of the Surratt Society. I believe he was also involved in the debate a few years ago as to whether a pillowcase belonging to a Pennsylvania museum should be allowed to be used for a DNA sampling related to Lincoln. I never heard the result of their "commission" to determine that use.

The article quoted Boyle saying that maybe one-tenth of school children learn something of the actual assassination story. In talking to many teachers over the years about what is taught in class (here in the Detroit area)-they have told me that Lincoln is barely talked about-much less the assassination. Things are sad. The classrooms don't even have pictures of Lincoln and Washington on the walls anymore.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I never did. And I'm old-school! (oh, ok - just old ) I am frantically trying to make up for lost time now.

I was a Clinical Supervisor for a 23 year old student attending Wayne State University. I mentioned A. Lincoln to her one day. She gave me a puzzled look and asked: "You mean that guy on the penny?" That is all she knew about Lincoln. Our work is cut out for us!

Which reminds me of an outstanding speech I heard by Harold Holzer in Feb. 2010 at the annual banquet of the Abraham Lincoln Association. He spoke on "Why Lincoln Matters." I know he was giving the speech at various places for different events. Anyone else have the opportunity to hear it? I'm not sure if it's available to purchase. The speech served to reinforce to us all that Lincoln is still relevant today. Obviously, it is a much needed message.
