Mitgang's Mister Lincoln at Ford's Theatre
In September/October 2024, the play Mister Lincoln written by Herbert Mitgang will be presented on stage at Ford's Theatre. The play will star Scott Bakula (Quantum Leap, Star Trek:Enterprise, CSI: New Orleans, etc) in the role of Mr. Lincoln.

If you can't go see it, and I can't, maybe we can get a few people together in early Oct and do a Springfield Tour.

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

I've driven by it a couple of times but it was always closed. It seems you can visit by appointment only
When we have visited Springfield in the past in the fall or spring there was never enough time to arrange a visit.
I'll have to check into this for our future visits.

Thanks Gene. When I did my two tours of Illinois, one of the 8th Judicial Circuit and one on the debate sites, it was closed also. If I ever make it back, that will be one of the places I want to visit. Let me know if you go, I value your opinion.

Gene an October trip sounds great. If others can join, even better.

I think the Long Nine Museum is definitely worth a visit. I visited again this summer.

They have a small post office section where Lincoln would have stopped when post master of New Salem. There is a wall sized Ostendorf mural in an upstairs room to commemorate the banquet held there by the Long Nine (2 members absent) after they spearheaded the move of the state capitol to Springfield. They also have several dioramas that commemorate moments in Lincoln's life. The museum has published some small historical pamphlets (some free, some for sale) that are well researched and tell about various aspects of Lincoln's connection to the area.

One new thing they had this year was a 1:12 scale model of the Lincoln Tomb. It is one of 3 (believed) that once existed. Current research seems to indicate it was created around the time of the 1930s tomb renovation/restoration. It is really quite impressive.

The last few years, the museum has been open from June 1 - August 28, typically in the afternoons Tuesday through Saturday. There may be some deviation from this and there may be circumstances where they would open other times of the year by appointment. I know the guy who is the museum manager and if we got a group together I think I could get something arranged in the off season.
