Jonathan H. Mann 1961-2023
I have sad news for Abraham Lincoln collectors. Jonathan Mann, the publisher and co-founder of the newsletter "The Rail Splitter ", has died after being attacked by a deranged homeless man. railsplitter.com

My favorite "rail-splinter" was - Lincoln “apparently not” a sexist - January 4, 2012:

[A] small 2 x 2 1/2” booklet we recently acquired, [is] titled “A Full Pocket Book of what Great Men and Great Women have thought of Woman Suffrage.” It was published by the N.Y. Woman Suffrage Association circa 1910. It has pictures of four men and four women with pithy quotes on the topic.

Lincoln is pictured on the back cover. Despite an endorsement by such an icon as Lincoln, women did not get the vote until 1919.

The Lincoln quotation reads: "I go for all sharing the privileges of government who assist in bearing its burdens, by no means excepting women."

"So very difficult a matter is it to trace and find out the truth of anything by history." -- Plutarch

This is horrible news. I spoke to Jonathan several times on the phone years ago. He was always friendly and a great help. He told me the Railsplitter was basically a labor of love. The auction catalogs alone were worth signing up for. He was a plethora of Lincoln relic knowledge. Rest in peace.
