Who is this?
Yesterday, Betty, Lindsey and I visited the Maryland Hall of Records/State Archives. I looked through one collection that had many of Oldroyd's photographs that were in his collection. Most of them were identified except for this one:

Now Betty said this man looked familiar to her but she couldn't come up with a name. I also think I've seen this photo before but I am also coming up empty. Does anyone recognize who this is?

RE: Who is this?
I have also seen that photo quite a few times. For some reason I want to say that it has been misidentified as Herold. I hate this - I can almost see the book and page that it's on, but can't recall a title!

I'm with you Laurie, I think I've seen it labled as Herold also. It's his eyes.

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

RE: Who is this?
I can say that I have never seen this photo before, but it does look like Herold. However...an older Herold.

I can't say I recognize this fellow.

I agree with Ed Steers. I do not recognize the person, but I have a vague feeling I have seen the photo somewhere. I just do not know where.

RE: Who is this?
About three months ago, Dave Taylor posted a photo that was said to be of David Herold. I knew that I had seen the photo before, but could not remember where. The old brain moves slowly these days, but it still works!

I cannot find a copy of the book that I think this photo is in, but here are some details. In the early-1980s, before I became director of Surratt House, Mr. Hall, John Brennan, and I (and maybe others) were asked to verify that this picture was of David Herold - and another one shown that was thought to be Booth. We all agreed that the photos were neither of Herold nor Booth.

They were subsequently published in a family folklore book and listed as Herold and Booth. I believe the title of the book is Treasures in the Attic, and it was written by a lady who had inherited a family home here in Southern Maryland with history dating to the 1800s. One of the family members was believed to have been part of the Confederate underground (perhaps the Doctors' Line) during the Civil War.

It's a charming book to read, but not always historically accurate.

RE: Who is this?
Speaking of David Herold....anyone read "David Herold His True Confession" (fiction)?

RE: Who is this?
Fiction is the operative word here. Nice style of writing for yet another "escape" theorist who has suddenly come on the scene. When I first met her at a Surratt function several years ago, she introduced herself as a new publisher looking for authors.
