What Happened to the Money?
Not sure if any of you are interested in the mystery of the Confederate gold after it left Richmond on April 2, 1865, but a long-time Surratt member (and former head of NOAA) has been researching it for years. He has retired to Washington, Georgia, and joined the search with an interested group down there -- one of which has published a book on the subject this year. Mark is very impressed with the results.

RE: What Happened to the Money?
I'm assuming this is referring to the incident referred to in this article:

https://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/arti...erate-gold

I haven't read the book linked to by Laurie, but if the thieves had any "street smarts" they probably sold the gold for a fraction of its value (in hard Union currency) to a fence/middleman who arranged for the gold to be melted down. That is if somebody who couldn't melt down the gold wasn't connected to the original group of thieves. Melting the gold down would've made it untraceable from authorities.

It doesn't make much sense for the thieves to bury the gold for a long time after they've stolen it.

RE: What Happened to the Money?
This is one done 15 years ago by a very nice man that I had several chats with. His theories were even part of a "documentary" on History Channel or A&E because he and another gentleman traveled all over the South and Southwest working on his search for all the places that a still-existing cult was said to be guarding treasures to this day. I'm not suggesting that you buy this particular book. I'll let you know my feelings on this new one by Bob Young,

Rebel Gold: One Man's Quest to Crack the Code Behind the Secret Treasure of the Confederacy Paperback – January 3, 2005
by Warren Getler (Author), Bob Brewer (Author)

For some reason, Amazon won't let me cut and paste the description of the material. Google Amazon for that, if interested.
