Frustration
Sometimes, life is not fair! The Surratt 2020 conference is pretty much set to go -- except for the after-dinner program on Saturday night, and that's where the frustration comes in.
Some of you are probably familiar with an excellent, two-man production that has been performed at Ford's for a number of years. Entitled "One Destiny," it is a dialogue between Harry Hawk and Harry Ford after the assassination and runs about 40 minutes. It was written by playwright Richard Helleman. Over the past year, it has been performed in West Virginia and also in northern Maryland and is set to be repeated at the ALPLM. I want it here in Clinton on April 4, 2020. I contacted Mr. Helleman directly and found that Ford's contract with him will not allow the script to be performed less than 100 miles from D.C. West Virginia, the mountains of Maryland and Illinois are free and clear, but Surratt House is just 15 miles from Ford's Theatre. Mr. Helleman has promised to link me in with the Ford's Theatre Society, which pretty much controls life at the historic site, to see if they will grant an exception. Keep your fingers crossed. |
