Very sad news: passing of Herb Swingle
I have come across some very sad news. Herb Swingle, who joined this forum in 2012, and made many thoughtful posts, has died.

Here is a thread from 2015 that was devoted to Herb.

I'm sorry to hear about his passing. Being a relative newcomer to the forum, I only had one interaction with him here, but Herb was very helpful with the information on John Surratt he provided. Hopefully scholars/researchers in the future will continue to be as knowledgeable.

No wonder Herb and I got along so well. We shared the same birthday, only I was a year older -- and we both loved helping children. What a fine gentleman.

RE: Very sad news: passing of Herb Swingle
I only had the fortune of knowing Herb through this forum, but at least I had that. Herb was a very giving person, you could tell he enjoyed sharing with others. I have several good memories of comments he has made here and in a few private messages. He had great enthusiasm.

There is a saying, "Love has a way of never letting go". Herb gave us some good memories that we can hold on to.
Rest In Peace

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

I'm saddened to hear this. I always admired Herb, especially for his reaction to some of the situations he encountered. He will be missed.

I second especially Gene and Rob - very sad. And despite his increasing health issues he always seemed a "positive thinker".

I met Herb in 2015 when I went up to Auburn NY to visit the Seward House and give a talk on Powell. We had a delightful lunch in Skaneateles, NY about 5 miles from Seward House. He was a skilled historian and researcher. He will be missed.

Always enjoyed reading Herb's posts describing talks he gave to Seniors on the Civil War. I wasn't surprise to read that he received an Outstanding Volunteer Contribution Award from the New York State Office for Aging. Herb enriched the lives of many.

I always enjoyed seeing Herb post on the forum. I would have liked to have met him in person to talk all things Lincoln. My condolences go to his family and we will all miss him.
