RE: New Information on the Hunley Deaths
That is a fascinating article, Laurie. Vicki and I have been to Charleston and visited the Hunley (many years ago). At that time the guide explained that it was anybody's guess as to how the men perished.
A few years ago Linda posted a link to a very interesting article about the Hunley. I am re-posting her link here. |

RE: New Information on the Hunley Deaths
This article makes a lot of logical sense. Having seen the Hunley, I have long wondered why the men where at their positions on the crank. It always seemed that something quick and catastrophic must have occurred since no one moved to escape. Running out of oxygen would have taken time and the men would have moved about to find better air. I think the article is significant.

RE: New Information on the Hunley Deaths
This does make perfect sense and I can't imagine the charge that 135 pounds of gunpowder would generate. It would be catastrophic.
I never knew that anvil shooting was a sport, but here's what a mere 2 pounds of gunpowder does to a 100 pound anvil. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s68XpEgpg1Q "There are few subjects that ignite more casual, uninformed bigotry and condescension from elites in this nation more than Dixie - Jonah Goldberg" |

I do not recall this explanation even being listed among the possibilities when Vicki and I visited the Hunley years ago. It seems very logical to me. |
