Fasces - when you see this word, you probably think of it being the root for another historical word, Fascist. Well, there are fasces all over the place in the Lincoln Memorial because the original meaning refers to bundles of rods that were carried by guards around magistrates and priests in ancient Rome - basically symbolizing the absolute power of the government. The easiest ones to spot in the Memorial are the posts to the armrests on Lincoln's chair. That link will show you where others are located.

Interestingly enough, Benito Mussolini and his Fascist Party rose to power in 1922, just a few months after the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial.
