RE: Lincoln In Worcester Massachusetts
Hi Dan and go Pats! As we've have previously discovered in the various topics covered on the board, authors do make mistakes. Our own Linda Anderson discovered that General Grant did indeed accompany Mrs. Lincoln on the evening of April 13, 1865 to see the Grand Illumination in Washington. At the time we had gone through 8 other sources which were wrong on this. So if you find anything that shows Lincoln and Seward were in Worcester together at a hotel please share it with the group. A story like that may have its roots somewhere; I hope you can find something definitive.

RE: Lincoln In Worcester Massachusetts
Dan & Roger,

I too have read somewhere that Lincoln shared a hotel room with Seward in Worcester when the two were campaigning for Zachary Taylor back in 1848. However, I have not found any credible evidence to support this. Former, (and at the time future) Massachusetts Governor Henry Gardner was at a dinner held in Worcester by Gov. Levi Lincoln. He does not mention Seward's presence at the dinner which he most certainly would have if he had been there. It is possible that it was an oversight on Gardner's part, as he was writing many years after the event. He does, however, mention that Seward and Lincoln spoke togehter at Faneuil Hall in Boston a few day's later. It would be interesting to find out where Lincoln slept in Worcester, while he was there. I'll seewhat I can find out!

Arthur Rugg writing many years after Lincoln's visit could not find many people that actually remembered Lincoln in the city. After all, at the time he was a young congressman from Illinois, and would not have attracted too much attention.

Craig

Oh ya Go PATS!!!
