Neat article, Betty! Thanks for posting. I did not realize a horse could live to 43 - amazing.

RE: Civil War Equine Survivors
Most horses don't! Two of mine lived to age 28 and 32 respectively....with 32 being the usual oldest age. Purebread horses don't live as long usually as grade or "mixed breed" horses. My purebred quarterhorse mare lived to be only 28, while my quarterhorse mix lived to the ripe old age of 32. Ponies can live into their 40s with the oldest on record being about 45 years of age, I think. My sister has a Shetland pony, which she keeps as a pet companion for her large horse, who is approximately 35-38 years old or so the girl who sold him to her stated.....

Wow! I had no idea--I always assumed that horses lived only into their 20s or so.

Thanks, Gene. I don't know if this is just a shorter version of the same show or something totally different. But there is a 4+ minute YouTube video with the same (or very similar) title here.

Another notable horse was Comanche. He was ridden into the Battle of the Little Big Horn by Capt Myles Keogh. He was the only survivor on the US Cavalry side. He was severely wounded but managed to live to the age of 29. He was stuffed and mounted and can be viewed at the University of Kansas.

Even better article with full history of Comanche, who appears to have begun life as a wild mustang. Disgusting description of how men could capture wild horses via method known as "creasing."

Trivia Question Posted Here: Only two horses in American history have received funerals with full military honors. Comanche is one; who was the other?
