Have not read the book, but have heard raves about it for years -- and raves about the author. I think it has been around for about fifty years - with few competitors in the field.

This is a great book. Yes Laurie, I was thinking it must be fifty years old. Winks was a great historian. He also did a book on the blacks in Canada. The author was American and a fascinating man.
Read his obituary in the N.Y. Times

RE: the Civil War Years : Canada and the United States
Finally finished this very good book. Kieran is right.
This is probably the best book (written mainly from the Canadian perspective) on the relationship between Canada and the US during the Civil War. There is an excellent chapter on the St. Albans Raid, not much about assassination conspirators in Canada.
It is well written, but it is not light reading. No fluff or filler material here. There is so much new information it is almost overwhelming.
Sources well documented. Mr. Winks has written several other interesting sounding books.

I was able to find a bargain, like new copy for only $6. I found it interesting, and can recommend it, but shop around, it's expensive. I'm a bit thrifty on some of my book purchases and would not have spent more than $20 for this one. It's not likely I will pick it up and read it cover to cover again, but I did enjoy reading it.
