RE: Who is this lady?
I think Roger may be on the right track. If not Queen Victoria, maybe another member of European royalty?

RE: Who is this lady?
Not Queen Victoria, but very close. The lady was royal, and the lady was traveling.

Well, that leaves me three choices: My first guess would be the first-born child of Victoria and Albert, Victoria, Princess Royal. However, she married very high up on the German tree and would ultimately be the wife of German Emperor Frederick III. Would such royalty be shopping on her own as the clue suggests?

From the little that I have read about Victoria's children, I think Princess Alice (who only became a German Grand Duchess) would have been my favorite, so I'll make her guess #2 -- followed by Princess Beatrice, who appears to have been somewhat of a brat.

BTW: Just last week, I stumbled upon the following site that gives a good crash course in Victoria and Albert's children https://www.historyextra.com/period/vict...d-parents/

RE: Who is this lady?
I'm guessing that Laurie's #2 is correct ... Princess Alice. But I have to quibble over the "who only became a German Grand Duchess". If we're correct that it was Alice, then Mary Lincoln was eye-to-eye with a great grandmother of Prince Phillip, Queen Elizabeth's husband, and so a great great grandmother of the next King of the British Commonwealth.

RE: Who is this lady?
Laurie had it right the first time! It was Victoria, Princess Royal, at that point the Crown Princess of Prussia.

Hint #1: She wrote something that has been mentioned at least once on this forum.
