Garrett Farmhouse site
Is the Garrett Farm site still open to the public? A friend of mine went by there this weekend and told me that the sign on the opposite side of the road directing you to the farmhouse site is no longer there and he could not find the path to the site. There were also signs posted "US Govt. Property - Keep Off." And someone had put some rope up keeping people from going into the woods. I know the new sign is on the right side of the hi-way now. Anyone been by there lately ?

Hopefully the new sign is still intact. The median strip site is definitely closed, however. Our Booth tour buses drive slowly past it now, but this spring no one complained about it being closed. There is a nice little museum in Port Royal that does cover the history.

I have been by there recently and the whole area is pretty well blocked off. I feel that the Base is more responsible than the Jail. The Jail didn't want people parking near them, lest a prisoner disappear occasionally. But the Base has closed parking up and down 301. They have even closed the Big Rig pull-offs. But be aware, the Police have their favorite Traps well tended. The most active one is just a bit North of the entrance to the Jail (They watch both directions, from the cross-over.) If a police car isn't parked there, he is out giving a ticket. - every day.

Thanks to Rick Smith and Laurie for sending these photos. This is what the Garrett site looked like on Monday. It looks like the site is being taken over with brush.

Check my posting today April 16, 2016 with pictures taken from similar positions on the exact 150th anniversary of the Booth death last year. And an unusual circumstance I saw when reviewing the photos!
