Friendship and working together will eventually make things work. I wish that you could have been in the audience at Surratt House yesterday to see about 60 African Americans and 25 Caucasian Americans listening to a wonderful black professor and then spending time working in tandem to discuss both history and future. There was not one agitator in the group who was trying to defeat the purpose of our museum to present an educational opportunity.

I should have added that one member of the Caucasian audience had driven from North Augusta, SC in order to hear Dr. Medford because she has admired her for years while watching C-Span.

Laurie, you are correct about the tarter sauce! And I've never had a banana and peanut butter sandwich, though a VFW hall I played in an Elvis tribute band served them that night in tribute to The King. By the time we took our first break, they were sold out!

Betty, my wife made some wonderful peanut butter fudge last week. I'm not a big fudge fan, but I ate more than my share of that stuff!!! As far as horseradish, I like it if it's just the horseradish and no weird additives. I had some in a great Bloody Mary recipe earlier this week. And sushi with plenty of wasabi is one of my favorites!!!

Boy do I agree with the Sushi and Wasabi, Jim!! Yum, Yum!!!!

I'm sorry but this subject has been beaten to death - I'm dropping out of this discussion - it has no historical/educational value whatsoever -

Laurie,
(I know this is off the topic.. sorry)
I was in D.C. a little over a week ago, heading to N.C. I really wanted to head over to the Surratt house. Two teenage boys complaining about the length of our ride from Ma. made me think otherwise. Sounds like a great program you had yesterday, Congrats. If I lived close I would be a regular at such events.

Dave said not to apologize for expressing my opinion. That was nice. I was trying to be nice myself especially to people who I do not think I ever will find much to agee with. ( I do like Dr. Medford... dont suppose, Laurie, you got her take on the flag?...Big GrinUndecided)
Changing the subject from something I am interested in by yucking it up over peanut butter and mayo is ok... but I point out that it is a debate tactic to triviliaze a subject when one is out of arguments and even tried to joke re "lost cause" but, man.

Roseio,

I believe I answered your question twice. Did you ever read my answer? You continue asking the same question. Is it that you do not like my answers? If so, then I am very sorry, but I cannot help you with that.

RE: Confederate Flag
Dr. Medford herself brought up the flag issue briefly in the course of her talk and related it to the ongoing problems created during the Civil War and afterwards in a terrible Reconstruction era where 6+million souls were given freedom without the education and means to take advantage of it.

She made an interesting point that, when first gaining freedom, the push was on by both sides to give the freedmen the vote first. Land came next, and education last. They quickly realized that things had to be reversed.

Trust me, she does not speak well of Andrew Johnson, who never got over his hatred of the upper class and used politics to attack them - leaving many of the freedmen caught in the middle. She also expressed frustration at the numerous attempts that have been arranged by current government officials within the past few decades to have significant dialogue on race relations. Such efforts have gone nowhere because the parties involved shirked their duty.

It has been far too long a time since the last one. The pleasure of sharing your company and a glass or two is always welcome.

I am sorry my writing was unclear. I was re-stating my line of thought and not re-asking questions nor seeking re-answers.

Rosieo,

I understand.

RE: Confederate Flag
Beautifully written, SandiS, and thank you.

"The event sounds like I would have loved it. I go to the Cspan, YouTube,Vimeo school of independent Civil War studies and always like to hear Dr. Medford speak. She is, of course, very good, but also she is a personable speaker. She must be a wonderful teacher."

One more comment about Dr. Medford. She is just as personable one-on-one as she is on camera or in a classroom setting. Edna and I have been friends for almost a decade with both of us serving on the board of advisers of The Lincoln Forum and the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. She is a calming and reasonable voice and keeps an open mind.

Welcome, SandiS!

Re.: "I struggle with the visceral need some feel that they can only honor their ancestors with the battle flag that has been so abused and become such a divisive symbol" - I've asked this before but received no reply. I try again. Is there any pre-war symbol of southern heritage etc.?

RE: Confederate Flag
I cannot think of pre-war symbols that define either North or South, and that may be because people were more bound to their home state than to a full region???
