That is a great photo, Tom. Love the cap instead of the mortar board! I bet it was a thrill to toss the mortar board into the air, though... Congratulations again.

These robes make such a distinguished look, it sure feels good wearing this and adds to make the day memorable. We don't have that, and at the celebration in school some students just would wear their usual clothing. The most disappointing was finishing university - the degree certificates were just sent home via mail, no celebration at all.

Wow - Eva....that's astounding! They make a BIG deal of it here in the US - University more so than high school. They were VERY particular what you wore under the gown in college - business attire only. No slacks for ladies and no sandals. In high school, they didn't care WHAT we wore under the gowns - back in the early 1970s (the "Woodstock hippie era") when I graduated high school - I wore cut-off "Daisy Duke" jeans under the gown and sandals! Likewise, so did several of my friends. My parents were appalled - even though you couldn't see through the long white gown....

either SUNY Oneonta or U of I Springfield. I will apply this fall during my gap year.

I graduated both high school and college in the '60s, so no Daisy Dukes. We were allowed to wear only our (full) slips under those gowns and had to keep the gowns on until everything was over and we could decently get back into street clothes.

Most schools were not air conditioned then, but both my high school and college commencements were held outdoors in early-June. College wasn't as bad as high school because it was high in Maryland's mountains, but it was still hot in those garments, and those of us who wore honors hoods had even more layers. The gowns in those days (and the mortar boards) were much thicker than those lightweight nylon robes of today.

In both cases, the ceremonies were solemn and dignified -- even the audience members. The recent graduations that I have attended have been travesties of misbehavior on both the graduates' side and the audiences'. Some of the parents are worse than the kids.

I'm dreading my grandson's graduation in three years. He's a straight-A student (so far), but announced to us yesterday on his 15th birthday that he was not going to be either valedictorian or salutatorian of his class because those students have to give speeches! No way is he going to do that... I was #2 in my class (salutatorian), and his mother was #4. We decided that we will be perfectly happy with him being #3.

I graduated from high school[300 in the class] in late June.My undergradute ceremony[5000 in the class] was in mid-April.I would have loved to have earned straight-A's in both high school and college.It all depended on my own interest-level and motivation!Keep on,keep on-Tom!

In high school, I was a rebel. I literally hated high school (I was horribly bullied) and will never go to a high school reunion because of it. I did not do well academically; I wanted to study, read and research what I wanted to; never paid attention in math class; political science, home economics (which we were required to take and which I detested) and considered these courses a waste of time. I loved literature, history (of course!) and art but graduated in the lower half of my class, didn't care, and thought it was funny - I just wanted to "get out...."

College however, was an experience like a breath of fresh air. I loved it. It was tons of fun and like another world. I excelled and graduated magna ***** laude with my Bachelors and in the top 20 with my Masters. Our graduation was dignified and extremely respectful. At Commencement, after we had gotten our diplomas and returned to our seats, all of the professors turned to face the students, bowed and saluted us! It was a wonderful moment.....

My college experience was fantastic! I now see my high school friends for what they are,not for what they were.I hope they now see me in the same light!

My ceremony lasted 2 hours and 7 Minutes. There was one part of the ceremony where the graduates presented a red rose to their parents. It is still taking a while to sink in as I begin my cover letter to Paul Tetreault.
