It's that time of year, tomorrow at 2 on WJZ, the Orioles open up against the Twins. This could be the year we take it all, so everyone better memorize this classic by The Trashmen:

RE: Opening Day Baby!!!!!!
Dan - I grew up rooting for the Celtics - unless they were playing the St. Louis Hawks (more birds!). In the 1950s, a college star named Cliff Hagan graduated college and served two years in the Air Force. He was stationed at Andrews AFB in my father's unit, and they became friends. We went to every game at the base gym, met his wife Martha, and thoroughly enjoyed watching him play with another big guy that went pro after the Air Force -- Lou Tsuroupolis (hope I spelled that correctly).

Hagan was signed by the St. Louis Hawks and played out his career there, I think. It was in the era of Bob Pettit at the Hawks, and those two were a dynamic duo. Cliff retired and coached college, including his alma mater, Kentucky. Both Hagan and Pettit are still alive and must be in their 80s now.

The days of Bob Cousy, Cliff Hagan, Bob Pettit, Larry Bird, and Pistol Pete Maravich were the days of sheer talent - not just height and slam dunks. Hagan was known for his accurate hook shots. Do they even use those anymore?

Since we are supposed to be Lincoln-oriented, do you think Abe would have played basketball in his day? I see him as too awkward, despite his strength.

Todays NBA is hard to even watch. It's no longer a team sport. That's a great question about Lincoln. Maybe those wrestling skills would give him the balance he would need to handle the ball. Funny to think that at 6'4 he would probably be a shooting guard in the NBA today.

RE: Opening Day Baby!!!!!!
I used to be able to pick up the St. Louis Hawks' games at night from south-eastern Colorado where I lived by listening to St. Louis radio station KMOX. I was a Los Angeles Laker fan; and Cliff Hagan always seemed to be able to contain the Laker's star player, Elgin Baylor, when he guarded him. I had a lot of respect for him and Bob Pettit.

Dan, I am still paying off my lost bets from 1979. I bet Indiana State in the NCAA Championship game, and Bird's team went up against Magic Johnson and Michigan State. Indiana State went into the game 33-0. But Michigan State won.

RE: Opening Day Baby!!!!!!
Seeing Larry Bird play basketball as a kid in his backyard is….simply incredible. I can't even imagine what it must have been like to see him become what he became. But as a teenager there was no athlete I hated more than Larry Bird. I hated ALL of the Celtics, but Bird was the ringleader, so I hated him the most. But as the years rolled by, I had more and more respect for him, until I actually really liked him by the time the retired. Let's face it, he couldn't really jump, couldn't really run, but on a court full of supremely physically gifted athletes, he could have scored 50 points just about every single game if he wanted to. And rubbed their noses in it the entire time, as he is well known as one of the greatest trash talkers in history. As a sports fan, part of you HAS to respect that lol.

Regarding the YANKEES and the way they try to buy championships, there's a comedian named Doug Stanhope who made this joke some years ago…"Rooting for the Yankees is like going to a casino and cheering for the House." Wink

Oh, also nice to see a mention for Pistol Pete. Seems like I never see his name when people discuss legends of the game, even here in Raleigh where he played at Broughton for a while when his dad was head coach at N.C. State. But if you have any doubts, look him up on Youtube. I'll never forget back in the day seeing some old video of him on a fast break. As they approached the basket, Pete just stopped on a dime and casually laid the ball in the basket as the defender went sailing past. I remember thinking at the time, "That was just awesome. That guy is different.".

Pistol Pete was absolutely fantastic as a ball handler. If he had not been white, he would surely have been signed by the Harlem Globetrotters!

I think his main problem, however, was that his father trained him to be the sole star of the team - not a team player. He was playing around the time that I decided to become a wife and mother, so I don't remember his later days (husband did not like sports that much - especially basketball). Didn't he die at an early age - Maravich, not the husband?

Someone mentioned the Yankees, and I'm the Mantle, Berra, Maris, etc. era. Loved those guys. One of our local stations here in D.C. recently ran a video from several years ago where they interviewed Yogi and Joe Garigiola (there's that spelling again!). It was hilarious.

I didn't realize that those two grew up together in St. Louis, played ball together (hitting everything from rocks to bottle caps), and even went pro together. Another set of National Treasures.

Roger, the Bird and Magic rivalry brought some classic games. Sorry you came up on the short end on that bet. "Let it ride" on the Cubs this year. I'm a Red Sox Fan rooting for the Cubs. hard to think baseball with 5 inches of snow on the ground.
