Sounds exciting Herb.

If you get back in time, think about joining us for the Springfield tour this coming Oct 2 - 4.

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

Herb, many Malaysians are interested in Abraham Lincoln, and I have received several emails from students there. Here is an example from 2001:

Subject: Lincoln's Birthday

I am a Malaysian student and I am doing a project on Abraham Lincoln's birthday. I would like to know what is the significance of the occasion and how is it celebrated in the United States. I hope to find out those information with some assistance. It would also be very helpful if you could recommmend any websites where I can find information on Lincoln's Birthday. Lastly, I truly appreciate the help.

Toia, yes, 10+ years ago I used to get emails from all over the world. Nowadays, I do not receive nearly as many. There are now many more Lincoln websites, plus many question-and-answer websites that did not exist at that time (so writing a retired teacher is not needed).

Here's an interesting one from Macau:

Subject: Springfield

Dear Roger,
Many years ago in 1980 in San Francisco, I have a Taiwanese roommate whose Chinese name is "Chuen Tin" which is a direct translation of Spring-field into Chinese. I asked why he has such a name. He told me that his father named him after Lincoln birth place- so Springfield is stuck in my mind as Lincoln's birth place. Recently I open a shop in Macau ( a city next to HK), I named it Springfield to honour Lincoln and his birth place. I am totally disappointed when I looked at your website and found Lincoln was borned elsewhere. Anyway, I can see from your one-page write up about Lincoln, Springfield was the place where Lincoln married his wife and where he was buried. But you did not elaborate on Springfield. Thus, can you tell me more about this city, where it is and its history. In fact, I saw from an encyclopedia an old picture of Springfield- it is just like a Clint Eastwood movie where there are two line of 2-storey wooden buildings opposite to each other on the main street.

Could I draw your attention to the fact that Dale Carnegie (the author of How to win friends and influence people) is a fan of Lincoln. He has written a book called "Lincoln the unknown". Dale taught public speaking in YMCA in 1912. So he was only 50 years from Lincoln's death. Dale taught me the word "nagging" which he used to describe how Lincoln was treated by his wife.

I am thinking of putting up pictures of Lincoln and turning my shop into a showcase of Lincoln in the Far East. Can you help me to make it happen?
