RE: How Reliable Is This?
Thanks for reminding me of the macassar oil, Blaine. I think one of the first times I sent Joe Beckert running to a dictionary on this forum was when I mentioned antimacassars. When I was a child, we lived with my grandmother - who insisted on crocheting many antimacassars to put on the backs of chairs to keep them clean. She also made ones that went on the arms of stuffed chairs to keep body oils from soiling the upholstery.
They were/are beautiful pieces - very lacy and with intricate patterns. However, I still don't like them! As for coconut oil, I remember my mother using Emulsified Coconut Oil Shampoo when I was a child. She had naturally curly, blonde hair; and that was the only hair product she ever used. No Dippity-Do, no hair spray, no coloring... |

I know a few people who own the very same "artifact" - plus there is one at McNair in the Trial Exhibit Room.... Several years ago, I was asked by Cary Delery of the Historical Shoppe in Louisiana how he could authenticate a piece of rafter allegedly from Ford's. The piece had about the right patina and the saw marks looked like they could be of the right period, but there was no real provenance and no way to easily compare it to any other piece of rafter. The only way to authenticate it would have been to compare it to another rafter with provenance. To Mr. Delery's credit, he has yet to sell a piece of rafter. The piece from lebarr gallery probably came from Cary. He is a huge collector/dealer with a great reputation and has terrific inventory. BTW, I have snippets of AL Hair and gallows shavings from Cary. I've known him for twenty plus years and dare I say....trust him. |
