Christine, one of the most unusual books out there is Mask for Treason by Vaughan Shelton. Shelton discusses his theory that the 'Brutus' in the Neff/Baker ciphers is none other than William Seward! I believe he feels Seward was part of a separate conspiracy, not JWB's.

Shelton also writes that David Herold tried to poison Booth. He claimed the field glasses Mary Surratt delivered to Lloyd contained poison that Herold put into Booth's whiskey.

Christine and Roger,After all the"research"that I have done on Seward and his communication with certain "folks".I have had a feeling that are "good friend"Seward was into more than we will know!

HerbS, I do not understand what you mean. Seward and his family were attacked and severely injured as a result of the conspiracy.

For whatever reason, Seward couldn't have believed he was in danger because he had no guards. Or else he had lived with threats for so long that he became immune to them.

After Powell has coffee with Betty, maybe he'll answer a couple of my questions.

I’ve read that you expressed regret for hurting Fred Seward. Did you ever feel sorry for attacking William Seward? I Did you go to your death believing that trying to assassinate Seward was right even though you felt about bad about hurting the innocent people who got in the way?

Did you and Booth meet with a Seward chambermaid to gain information about Secretary Seward? What was her name? If it was Margaret Coleman, did you see her or injure her during the attack?

I'd like to ask John Surratt to tell me about the courier service from Richmond to where ever, and to include info about Sara Slater and those involved from southern Maryland, Balitimore and DC area (including Dr Mudd). I'd like to know more about his actual involvement in the kidnap, but especially the assassination plans, where he really was when President Lincoln was killed and what he was doing there.

Gene C.I feel that possibly,Seward still felt that he should have gotten the nomination for President instead of Lincoln.It's a long shot and I could be all wet.

Since I started this thread I guess I can at least tell you who I would like to have coffee with. I would ask John Wilkes Booth two questions.
1. Did you break your leg jumping onto the stage? Or did you break it falling from a horse?
2. Did Dr. Mudd know who you were when you called on him during the early morning hours of April 15, 1865?

These Victorian people would not know what to do with car keys! HA! Therefore I assume that your car keys would be perfectly safe with any of them!
