Betty and Toia,

It is remarkable that both Betty's and my ancestor survived the Battle of the Crater. Of course it cost an arm and a leg. Betty, sorry for the black humor. My GG grandfather Joshua lived until 1914.

What's so amazing is that soldiers that lost limbs survived the amputations without antibiotics! And the surgery was performed in unsanitary environments. Maybe they used liquor to clean the wounds and the alcohol killed most of the germs.
