Fantastic New Interactive 1865 DC Mapping Site
Want to know how long it took Booth to walk from the National Hotel to Ford's Theatre? What the distance was from Mary Surratt's House to Ford's? How long it took Powell to go from the Canterbury Theatre to Seward's House?
Here is a new interactive mapping site which works with GIS (Geographic Information System) "which lets us visualize, question, analyze, interpret, and understand data to reveal relationships, patterns, and trends." (Esri website.) I use GIS every day in my job. This neat site lets you add landmarks, calculate distance, and it has a timeline which lets you set it to April 1865; all to scale! Simply read the Map Usage directions and jump in! Have fun! http://civilwardc.org/maps/ "The Past is a foreign country...they do things differently there" - L. P. Hartley |
