When they became "engaged" is anyone's guess, but it would had to have been from February or March, 1865 - certainly a whirlwind courtship - unless he thought she was pregnant and was therefore going to "do the right thing" by marrying her.... it's a fascinating subject, but there is a lot of speculation.
