This is a great photo! The Canterbury was located at 9th and Pennsylvania Avenue in D.C. If you were to go to that site today, you would be at the FBI Headquarters. That building pretty much wiped out the entire block of old D.C. between 9th and 10th Streets. When you exit Ford's Theatre today and look to your left, you see the back of the FBI.

Every city had a hay market area in those days. The loaded wagons that you see are where D.C.'s hay market was located. Near the left, in the row of buildings, there is a towered building. That was the Central Guard House for the city. In 1862, a Pvt. Lanahan was held here before being executed for shooting and killing his sergeant. There will be a short story about this soon in an issue of the Surratt Courier.
