Having grown up in Indiana and experienced its harsh winters, I doubt whether the three faced camp would be used more than a couple of days.

I think the author was a little harsh on Herndon. Around the time of the article (1939), Herndon's reputation was probably at its lowest ebb. It has since done much better.

He did get the story from Dennis Hanks, so it wasn't like he made it up.
