RE: The Thanksgiving Proclaamation
Title of an article in Fox News this morning
"On this day in history, October 3, 1863, Lincoln issues powerful Thanksgiving proclamation" https://www.foxnews.com/lifestyle/this-d...oclamation According to the article, and I didn't know this - can anyone verify (fact check) this? "Though Lincoln is widely considered the most gifted writer of all American presidents, Secretary of State William Seward is the one who actually wrote the words of the Thanksgiving proclamation, according to an April 1, 1864, letter from John Nicolay, one of President Lincoln's secretaries." And this sentence "The United States at the time of Lincoln's holiday decree was just three months removed from the shocking waste of the Battle of Gettysburg, in which 50,000 men from both sides were killed, wounded or went missing in just three days of fighting." Shocking waste? Fortunately Lincoln didn't express those sentiments in his Gettysburg Address. So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |
