RE: Extra Credit Questions
Roger,
I can see the picture on my computer. It's strange that it didn't show up on my phone, as most pictures do. By the way, Clara Barton served as Everton Conger's nurse after he was shot during the Wilson-Kautz raid in June of 1864. That service helped lead to the founding of the American Red Cross. When Barton was visiting members of Congress to lobby for the organization, she was not doing very well. She spoke to Omar Conger, who listened politely, although he remained noncommittal. As she was preparing to leave, she asked him if he was related to Colonel Conger. When he told her that they were brothers, Barton relayed the story of how she took care of Everton after the battle. From that point on, Omar became a strong supporter of the Red Cross in the Senate and worked to get its charter adopted.
