All these food prizes reminded me of something I've been meaning to ask the experts here: In my readings of Civil War Washington, I get the sense that oyster bars were as common then as Starbucks are today. The only one I know of now in DC that might have been around in Lincoln's time is Hank's, near DuPont Circle.
Were oysters cheap for some reason back in those days or just very popular? --Jim |
