You got it! It was Weik. As for the Caldecott, I misread my source for this. It came from an article written by Randall T. Shepherd in the Indiana Magazine of History. He did call it an "honor" award and didn't specify whether it was Weik's daughter or granddaughter, both of whom were described as excellent writers in their own right.
