Well, my only response would be that by reading any particular author extensively, one can tell, probably with great accuracy, whether that author does or does not have strong opinions about whatever the subject matter is.
If I read a book about the life of, say, Winston Churchill, and page after page has these little "digs" liberally sprinkled throughout the book, I think if I bet that the author disliked Churchill, I would probably make a lot of money on that wager.
It seems to me that we can learn quite a bit about an author's viewpoint short of hypnosis.
But, again, my opinion is only E Pluribus Unum. It's obvious but I always reiterate it because I want to be sure that the reader doesn't think I KNOW, when I might be very incorrect about this or that.

My main point being that I think we CAN know about an author's state of mind etc just by painstakingly exploring that author's writings extensively.
