Saying someone has an ax to grind is no more pejorative than saying that they have an agenda.

Actually, Dave, I would say that both terms are pejorative. Either requires one to intuit a person's state of mind when they wrote something, which is impossible.

You are correct that Gene's comments are not a "review" as one would offer either a journal or popular magazine, but for several years now he has provided many reviews based on his extensive reading. My only purpose for calling him on this was to say that there were less volatile ways of making his point, which as I imagine can be gleaned from my comments, I only agree with partially.
