RE: A new Lincoln book, The Broken Constitution
Gene,
For a discussion forum like this where everyone approaches things with a varied background and unequal training (mind you, not better or worse, but simply different) David's comment was fine and generally expected. However, to tell an author who has spent time and money that his book isn't worth reading because it attacks the "character and reputation" of Lincoln is nonsense. The arguments about Habeas Corpus or Lincoln's legal ability to wage war to force the South back into the Union are both legitimate reasons not to buy the book, and I would argue they are not the reason David's letter will be trashed. It's because he feels a necessity to protect someone who doesn't need protection. Best Rob Abraham Lincoln is the only man, dead or alive, with whom I could have spent five years without one hour of boredom. --Ida M. Tarbell
I want the respect of intelligent men, but I will choose for myself the intelligent. --Carl Sandburg
