Kane's response just seems like an expedient answer that would protect him against recrimination or persecution. He said the same thing in the New York Daily Graphic article. It simply does not sound plausible.
Kane was a 20-year supporter of the arts and theatre in Baltimore, was a co-owner in the theatre where John Wilkes Booth had his debut, worked with the elder Booth, and was himself an actor in his earlier years.
For him to say he had never heard of Booth would be like a movie fan today saying that he never heard of Brad Pitt or Sandra Bullock. Kane's answer doesn't seem credible.
