In the link Anita sent (The Escape and Suicide of John Wilkes Booth) it says, "While Mr. Junius Brutus Booth was in the city of Memphis, playing an engagement at the Lyceum Theater in support of Mrs. Brune, I (Bates) sought an intro­duction to him, and by pre-arrangement was ac­corded an interview at my office, which lasted for several hours, being of much interest to myself as well as Mr. Booth."

So I think the alleged affidavit (if it's real) was made in Memphis, not from going "East."
