I called the motel. They said I have to go through booking.com to cancel. Booking.com does have an option (on-line form) to explain the situation to the motel and hope, I guess, that they will waive "some or all" of my fees.

Most hotels/motels will refund you in full with 24 to 48 hours notice -- especially due to illness or death in family. It's these super-duper travel agencies that try to get you for all they can.
