This person joined as a Private and ended the war as brevet Major General. (that rank was actually formalised just at the end ... after being a brigadier general for quite some time). I get the impression his looks belie his nature (as you can imagine for someone rising from Private to Brigadier General) . He fought on the Eastern half of the US ... in just about every major battle there. Before the war he worked for the New York Tribune ... not as a journalist ... his politics were very probably similar to the editor's. He was a Private in the spring of 1861. One year later he was Colonel of his regiment under McClennan's command Note the shirt. He also had a sword which was not the usual type carried by generals. |
