RE: Lincoln's lost gold?
Maybe the treasure hunters should turn their attention to Fairfax County Courthouse in Virginia, where legend has it that men under the command of Mosby hid burlap sacks of family heirlooms and treasures that Union forces under Gen. Edwin Stoughton had stolen on their raids against Virginia planters on the outskirts of D.C.
You can google the story of Mosby capturing Stoughton while he slept and taking the General, about thirty of his men, and a whole lot of horses into custody. They found the loot that the Union had stolen, but supposedly hid it between two trees somewhere in the neighborhood with the hopes of coming back for it. Legend has it that Mosby sent men back for it, but they were captured by Union forces and hanged -- and the treasure is still out there. See: https://www.legendsofamerica.com/mosby-treasure/ As much as that area has developed just within the past few decades, there is probably a McMansion sitting on top of the treasure. There is also a cute quote attributed to Lincoln as a result of the capture of Stoughton. The General was released from prison, but stripped of his rank. When Lincoln heard appeals for his reinstatement, the President supposedly refused, saying to the effect, "I can make brigadier generals, but I cannot make horses." Actually, in Southern Maryland and Mosby's part of the Confederacy, Union forces were quite good at stealing horses... |
