A belated welcome to the Forum from me as well.

As Laurie noted above, Thomas Eckert figures prominently in David Homer Bates's account of Lincoln in the Telegraph Office on April 14, 1865. Two years ago, I set out to better understand the account from Secretary of War Stanton's perspective, and came to a conclusion that I had not expected. I thought you might find it of interest.
