Possibly the chaplain was concerned the family would somehow hear about it from some one else, and their description of his injuries would be more horrifying. The nature of his injury does create a painful image in one's mind.
At least the chaplain balanced his letter with his comments at the end. For a family with a deep faith in God, this would be comforting. We will never know. I do remember in reading in "This Republic of Suffering", the author mentioned how important it was to the family to know what happened to their son, husband, or father and that they had "died well". So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |
