I can highly recommend this book. Easy to read, the subject matter is often overlooked. It's a powerful story in more than one way.

I agree - very interesting and powerful. I want to take a look through the rest of her papers some time. Being a nurse during the Civil War just sounds horrific - the doctors allowed them no influence, they couldn't take breaks, medical care was virtually nonexistent. They were essentially social workers, comforting people in awful situations. And that was a badly needed role.
