I agree - very interesting and powerful. I want to take a look through the rest of her papers some time. Being a nurse during the Civil War just sounds horrific - the doctors allowed them no influence, they couldn't take breaks, medical care was virtually nonexistent. They were essentially social workers, comforting people in awful situations. And that was a badly needed role.
