RE: Sherlock Holmes and a photograph of Abraham Lincoln
The Bailey's have a portrait of Lincoln on the wall in their living room in It's a Wonderful Life, along with (if I remember correctly) a portrait of George Bailey's father. In his office at the Savings and Loan, George has another portrait of his father and one of Herbert Hoover, which I take to be an indicator that the scene was set during Hoover's presidency. I believe these portraits in George's haunts are to be contrasted with those in Henry Potter's: Mr. Potter has a portrait of himself in his offices at home and at the bank.
I have endured a great deal of ridicule without much malice; and have received a great deal of kindness, not quite free from ridicule. I am used to it. (Letter to James H. Hackett, November 2, 1863) |
