Has anyone else noticed that the last portion of Carpenter's story is illogical?
"Have you ever noticed how a stick in one's hand will change his appearance? Old women and witches wouldn't look so without sticks. Meg Merrilies understands that." (Six Months at the White House," F.B. Carpenter, 1879, page 256.) I believe that Carpenter should have written: "The great actress Charlotte Cushman, playing the role of Meg Merrilies, understands that."
