RE: The origins of Memorial Day
For Memorial Day this year, I wrote a little piece about Joyce Kilmer, author of the (formerly?) famous poem "Trees". For those who don't know, Sgt. Kilmer was killed in action during the Second Battle of the Marne, and he had continued to write poetry even during his service in France.
Memorial Day 2017: Joyce Kilmer (The first word in the poem below is "Upon", which isn't clear in the handwriting.) I have endured a great deal of ridicule without much malice; and have received a great deal of kindness, not quite free from ridicule. I am used to it. (Letter to James H. Hackett, November 2, 1863) |
