Has anyone consulted the cemetery itself? Did they keep such things as logbooks? Memories of former superintendents? Too bad that George Kackley, a wonderful superintendent in the 1970s and 80s isn't around. He would have made an effort to find an answer.

I notice that the plaque does make reference to Lincoln visiting several times and asking for the crypt and coffin to be opened. Perhaps the donor was asked to write the inscription and borrowed that line from one of the books you mentioned -- or perhaps the cemetery has the documentation?
