RE: News about the 2015 Lincoln Funeral Train
Many thanks to Bill Binzel for sending the following!!!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "At the end June, through no fault of my own, I was in Duluth, Minnesota. All was not lost, as I discovered that we were within walking distance of The Depot, the St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center, and fabulous train museum. On display at The Depot is the 150th Anniversary replica of the train car which bore Lincoln's body back to Springfield in 1865. While the original car was constructed in 1864 to be used by the President whenever he traveled (i.e., the first version of Air Force One), Lincoln never used the car in life. The original car was destroyed by fire in 1911. The reproduction was painstakingly built by Dave Kloke of Elgin, IL. Other than the first, which is a Library of Congress photo, I took the pictures below and grant permission to all to use them as they may wish. (I apologize for their quality as they were shot with a phone camera.) If you find yourself in Duluth, The Depot is well worth the stop." |
