What would Lincoln say about the present day elections for President for 2016?

I came across this image on Twitter this morning. A supporter of Sen. Cruz posted it, I guess to indicate that being "mathematically eliminated" (that is, being unable to get enough pledged delegates to win nomination on the first ballot of the convention) is not necessarily determinative.



This is how I replied:

No primary elections in Lincoln's day. Main purpose of convention was to choose nominee from several viable candidates.
